The HKC brings together in a unique network people affected by flooding, politics, and the broadest range of flooding stakeholders. The HKC has more than 120 members in Germany and abroad.

Through the dialogue that emerges, the work of HKC encourages local flood prevention and awareness. At HKC, science and practice are brought together for the purpose of holistic flood prevention and therefore the sustainable development, provision and transfer of expertise.

Through years of practical work as much as scientifically research we have obtained simple but groundbreaking findings: Bottom-up prevention is not only lacking but also is a mandatory additive of flood defense-systems in the race against time that the pace of climate change is demonstrating. In this context we are reaching out for cross-disciplinary exchange, deepening partnerships with relevant experts and the respective institutes, always with the orientation to gather, reflect, fuse and deepen the current state of science and technology and make all it’s outcomes achievable as well as understandable for everyone.

At the moment the transfer of gained hydrological, geological, climatological and engineering knowledge by the respective scientists and experts onto the citizens does hardly exist. But precisely this knowledge can save so many damages, costs and lives. It is not even difficult to understand, nor putting it into praxis. Thus the current conditions are as unnecessary as untenable - namely that today homeowners around the world profoundly lack the awareness of both: the extent of their risks posed by flooding on the one hand and on the other their own capacity to mitigate significantly potential damages.  

Now these facts have to be not only recognized but also changed from behalf of the scientists and experts. This is what we do at Floodlabel:
The development of Floodlabel is based on the close cooperation of international experts and professional associations of water management. Their scientific developments and work results of the last four years have made the concept for Floodlabel possible. These experts form the scientific foundation, the so-called science base.

From their findings and experiences, the algorithms for assessing the dangers and thus the DNA for the Floodlabel have been developed, and continuously are being up-dated. These formulas enable the transfer function to an evaluation matrix which has already been tested by certified experts from Germany's water associations.

• Floodlabel’s mission is to mind and close this gap between science and people. With Floodlabel we are designing and implementing a smart governance tool for people’s individual flood resilience initiatives.
• At first step Floodlabel informs homeowners about their particular flood risks.  Secondly Floodlabel enables people in all kinds of living conditions to undertake simple, practicable and effective self-protection measures for their homes.
• Also Floodlabel is intended to support the planning and decision-making of experts and local governments to achieve more flood-resilient communities.
